Encourage your child to monitor their reading: As they read, they need to make sure that it makes sense and the words look right - they should notice when they make mistakes.
Encourage your child to fix mistakes by:
Rereading the text
Looking at the pictures
Using previous knowledge to predict meaning
Using phonics (sound out) to decode words
Parent can say:"Does that sound ok?""Does that make sense?" "Does that word look like it could say that?"
After Reading:
Discuss the story, what is the main idea, have your child give details about the story
What was the problem? What was the solution?
What happened at the beginning, middle and end of the story.
Writing:
Write daily, have your child record the sounds he/she hears in each word, say "tap out the word"
Space words
Use capitals at the beginning of each sentence, and period, question mark, or exclamation mark at the end
Write 3-5 sentences grade one, 5-7 sentences grade two
Spelling:
Dictate 5 words daily, see spelling words in your package
Have your child say the word and tap out the sounds before they spell (write) the word.
