Math Skills Grade Two:

  • Place Value:  
  1. Understanding of 10's and 1's  (25 means 2tens and 5ones; 2 groups of 10=20, and 5 )
  2. Decomposing two digit numbers into 10's and 1's (54 breaks down to 50+4, 5 tens and 4 ones)

Language Arts Grade One and Two
     Reading:
  • Encourage your child to monitor their reading: As they read, they need to make sure that it makes sense and the words look right - they should notice when they make mistakes. 
  • Encourage your child to fix mistakes by:
  •  Rereading the text
  •  Looking at the pictures
  • Using previous knowledge to predict meaning
  •  Using phonics (sound out) to decode words
  •  Parent can say:  "Does that sound ok?"    "Does that make sense?"   "Does that word look like it could say that?"​
After Reading:
  • Discuss the story, what is the main idea, have your child give details about the story
  • What was the problem? What was the solution? 
  • What happened at the beginning, middle and end of the story.
     Writing:
  • Write daily, have your child record the sounds he/she hears in each word, say "tap out the word"
  • Space words
  • Use capitals at the beginning of each sentence, and period,  question mark, or exclamation mark at the end
  • Write 3-5 sentences grade one, 5-7 sentences grade two
    Spelling:
  • Dictate  5 words daily, see spelling words in your package
  • Have your child say the word and tap out the sounds before they spell (write) the word.
